6 Instant Mood Boosters For Days When You Feel A Bit Rubbish

Woman dancing in road

No matter how much of a happy, positive, joyful person you are, there’ll always be times when you feel a bit rubbish. Nobody can be happy 100% of the time every day of every week. That being said, there are plenty of things we can do when we’re not having the best of days.

6 Instant Mood Boosters to Lift Your Spirits

1. Think of everything you’re grateful for

Gratitude is seriously underrated and it’s powerful stuff.

Comparison is undeniably the thief of joy and we all know that, but there are still times when it creeps into your mind and threatens to take over. It’s at times like this that gratitude is a massive mood booster.

If you begin to mentally list everything you have in your life to be grateful for, you can’t help but realise just how huge the list really is. It’s when we stop focusing on what we don’t have and instead reflect on what we do have that the magic happens. I’m not just talking about material things either. The list of all the possessions we have is incredible alone, but when you add everything else like the love you receive from family members, the support from friendships, the ability to breathe by yourself, walk by yourself and so on, you realise just how good things really are.

2. Get out into the fresh air

There’s something to be said for spending time outside, whether it’s going for a walk, a run, or spending time in the garden. There’s nothing quite like walking through nature, inhaling the air and listening to the birds tweeting and the trees rustling.

3. Find music that makes you feel good

Reach for your headphones, find some upbeat tunes, turn up the volume and have a good singalong. Try doing this while you’re doing housework so you not only have fun dancing and singing along, but you also end up with a tidy, clean house too!

4. Have a pamper session

It’s true that when you feel that you look good on the outside, you feel good on the inside too. It can be all too easy to put things like painting your nails and getting some ‘you time’ to the bottom of the list and making everything else a priority. Make a promise to yourself that you’re going to relax and treat yourself more.

5. Write a to do list and get things ticked off

When you feel like you haven’t achieved much or you feel a bit overwhelmed as to what to do, it can really have an impact on your mood. A great way to combat this is to make a to do list and prioritise what jobs need doing. If you feel that completing certain jobs will make you feel better, get to work on them straight away.

It’s a nice feeling to see everything that needs doing written down in an easy list. It makes things seem much more manageable. And of course it’s an even nicer feeling ticking it all off.

6. Read an inspiring book or watch an inspiring video

Inspirational books and videos are such good mood boosters whether you’re feeling a bit down, if things aren’t going to plan or you’re just plain fed up. There’s nothing quite so motivating as finding a book or video that completely inspires you and instantly lifts your mood. There are so many out there to choose from and of course Youtube has an enormous selection of inspiring videos that are completely free to watch.

In terms of books, The Secret is extremely uplifting. There are so many motivational authors and speakers mentioned in the book too whose books and videos you can easily find.

These are all ways that can work to transform your world when you’re not feeling your best. We’ve all been there and we all go through it. Remember that everything is temporary and this too shall pass. No matter how rubbish or worthless you’re feeling, no matter what situation you find yourself in, it will pass and good times are on their way.

Totally agree about getting out in the fresh air, it makes me feel so much better to just go out for a walk! I love writing down things I’m grateful for – last year I got into a really good habit of writing down five good things that had happened every day, I should really start doing that again!

I am certainly with you on how underrated gratitude is! Sometimes it is a little difficult to remember all the happy things and wonderful memories you do have in your life, especially if you are feeling down, so writing a list is an absolutely brilliant idea to give you something to look back on during those inevitable down days! Focusing on what you do have as opposed to what you lack has a lot of power! Fresh air works wonders to me as well, I love living close to so many parks in Leicester where I can escape into some green space if I need to! This was really uplifting post, thank you so much for sharing, Jenny!

These are such great tips! I’m a big fan of To Do lists, I quite often write stuff I’ve already done on my to do list so I can have a head start and the satisfaction of ticking them off ha! I used to live by The Secret quite religiously, so I think I might get back into it because it really helped change up my frame of mind! I definitely need to think more mindfully about what I’m grateful for – I know it really helps lift my mood! I’m so lucky to live in West London where I have Chiswick House and their gardens, as well as beautiful Bishops Park, too!
    Lovely post hun.
