5 Creative Tips to Add Character to Your Living Room

5 creative tips to add character to your living room

Collaborative post with Wise Media. Bored of your living room and looking to upgrade it to something more fitting for your personality? Here are 5 easy and creative ways to add character to your living room.

1. Update the lighting

A lot of people underestimate the dramatic change a good lighting fixture can create. Switch out your standard overhead light with a statement piece that fits the overall look or theme of your living room. Not only will the upgrade make your living room brighter, it will also give your room a focal point and a customised look.

You could also add decorative lamps, dramatic spotlights, and floor lamps for reading nooks. For added effect, try and install the accent lights in dark corners or above wall art or framed photos to better showcase them. The Spruce also suggests adding dimmers to wall switches so you can easily control the mood in the room. Dimming the lighting gives a romantic vibe, perfect for cosy nights in.

2. Liven up the walls

Sometimes, all you really need is to refurbish the walls. Bold walls tend to breathe new life into your space and add a distinctive personality and character, especially in a living room.

The easiest way to liven up the walls is to paint them with a colour of your choice. Remember to test the colour beforehand, and check out our other painting tips and tricks. You can also use patterned wallpapers, which are becoming popular again because they’re such an easy way to add character to an otherwise bland space.

For either option, you can change up all the walls of your living room, or choose an accent wall that will serve as the focal point. Once you’re done updating your walls, hang up wall art or framed photographs to make the space truly yours.

3. Frame the views

Another way to add character to a dreary space is to dress up your windows with a bit of colour. You can do this by getting curtains or blinds that complement the existing palette of your living room, or by painting the window frames for a more modern treatment.

Try painting the window frames a darker shade than your walls, to better frame your view. As for your curtains, BHG recommends hanging them a little higher than your windows to make the room seem taller and more grand.

4. Update your fireplace

A focal point in the living room, fireplaces are one of the most important design elements you can play with. They also tend to be some of the oldest parts of your living room, and while you can’t exactly change their shape and form easily, there are still ways to liven them up to add charm and character to your living room.

To update your old fireplace, try switching up your fireplace surround, which serves both as a frame for your fires during the winter and also as a place to display your favourite pieces on the mantle. The fire surrounds listed on Screwfix come in different materials and finishes like pine, walnut or oak veneer, all of which can easily transform the look of your room. They are also great for mixing and matching with your existing living room decor.

5. Add charm to your storage

Finish everything off by updating your living room’s storage spaces. One way to do this is to change the knobs on your cabinets and drawers to more interesting pieces. Apartment Therapy shares that small elements like knobs can have the biggest impact in terms of design and look. This is an inexpensive way to instantly add character to your room, for a fraction of the cost of completely replacing a piece of furniture.

If your living room lacks storage space, try placing shelves in convenient but unused nooks. You can use these areas to both store and display everyday necessities.

Lighting is definitely key! It either makes the room look dreary, cosy or just well lit and spacey.

Yes I totally agree! One of the first things we did when we moved into our new home was replace some of the lighting and it’s made a huge difference to the feel of the room. Some of the rooms were so dark and dreary before x
