Turning a cupboard into a wardrobe in our master bedroom

Turning a cupboard into a wardrobe

Even before moving into our new home, I was planning on turning a cupboard into a wardrobe in our master bedroom. We soon found that the cupboard is too small to easily fit a rail inside, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. Putting drawers and shelves into the small space seemed like the perfect way to make sure it became a really useful area.

First of all, we put up a white blind in the window, plus a curtain for extra warmth and to give a touch of colour to the room. As this window is the same size as the window on the landing and they’re both pretty narrow, it made sense to buy a pair of curtains and use 1 curtain for each window. Always the bargain hunter, this pair were half price in the sale at M&S. They’re a bit too small really but as they’re only for the landing and this cupboard space, I wasn’t too bothered!

Next on the list was adding drawers and shelves opposite the window. Wanting to do the work ourselves, we spent a lot of time trying to find drawers and shelves that would fit well in the really small space.

We finally found just what we’d been looking for at IKEA. Their PAX wardrobes are great value for money and they can be customised in lots of ways. The PAX range offered a frame that would fit the small depth of the cupboard space, with the option to add as many drawers and shelves as we like. It was exactly what we’d been looking for.

Assembling the frame and drawers and putting everything together took a while but it was quite easy to do. The hardest part was trying to finish assembling the frame when it was inside the cupboard, as there wasn’t much room in there to manoeuvre!

I don’t think we could have found something that fit more perfectly! We’re so happy with how the wardrobe has turned out.

All we need to do now is buy more shelves. It was hard to know how many we would need, so we started out with just 3 to begin with. Unfortunately, the lady that I was ordering the wardrobe from at IKEA was far from helpful. She made us feel very rushed so we didn’t feel we had the time to work out how many shelves to get. At least we can go back for more though, which is better than finding we have too many.

I’ve started to fill the drawers with clothes and the shelves with shoes and it’s everything I hoped it would be. Such a useful space that gives us the extra storage we desperately need. It’s going to look great when we’ve got more shelves so that I can fill it with shoes.

We’ve since added a mirror to the wall, but we’re thinking of buying lots of mirrored tiles to replace it, which would look fabulous. I guess that’s on the list of future projects.

Having my own walk-in wardrobe has always been a dream of mine. It may not have rails and it may only be very small but it’s a walk-in wardrobe nonetheless!

What a brilliant use of such a small space! Of the drawers and shelves that you selected worked so well and don’t leave the room feeling crap! The curtains are lovely, and a steal in the sale as well! I have a similar cupboard/walk-in wardrobe in my bedroom back at my family home, it just about fits a rail and some drawers underneath but your design looks far superior!
