Spare room makeover

Spare room makeover

A spare room makeover was desperately needed when we moved into our home. Just in case you need a reminder, here it is pre-makeover, in urgent need of some TLC.

Our first home. Spare bedroom before

After a thorough clean, many coats of paint and some carpet later, the room basically became a dumping ground.

Following a clear-out, it then became a home office for quite some time, a couple of years at least. Although if I’m honest it shared this title with dumping ground yet again a lot of the time!

We had a desk in the room for a long time and we eventually decided that it was much too large for the room and took up way too much space. The best thing was for it to go. After removing it, we completely changed the room with the new found space we had available.

First, we took out the old IKEA Aneboda wardrobe we had in the alcove next to the door because it didn’t really suit our storage needs. It had a rail for hanging clothes and we decided we just wanted a cupboard with shelving. I managed to persuade my husband to make his own cupboard and he has done such a good job!

I love the bright colours and the large polka dots on the storage box that sits on top of the cupboard. It’s a large box too, so it’s great for storing things out of sight. I use it to store gifts for friends and family. What I don’t love, though, is that awful patterned ceiling. I really wish we would have got it re-plastered before we started decorating!

And here is the rest of the finished room.

Spare room

I had really wanted a mirrored dressing table for a while, so when I found this one in the sale at BHS I had to have it!

I think I may have to spray paint that bin gold to make it fit in with the room more. It may not look quite so random then! We also need to replace the carpet at some point. It’s an old carpet my parents’ kindly gave to us when they replaced theirs, so it’s looking a little tatty now.

We found some storage units at a ridiculously low price when browsing a clearance sale at B&Q one day. They were meant to be for a bathroom, but we thought they would be great for our spare room to put books etc in. We just bought one at first, but when we got it home and saw that it fit so well in the room, we went back to the store and bought a second one! We were lucky to get it because it was one of the last ones remaining.

We put the two units next to each other to make them into one storage area. The printer sitting on top of them isn’t exactly ideal but it’s really the only place we can think of to put it!

Some seagrass baskets that we originally had in our living room storage unit fit perfectly into the top sections. They’re ideal for keeping lots of bits and bobs out of sight.

Our Vera Wang vase was given to us as wedding gift, so it’s very precious. I don’t want the cats to get anywhere near it, so it’s hidden away from them alongside some accessories I spray painted gold to match the room.

I wasn’t sure where to put the sewing kit my Mum bought me at first, but it’s so cute with the little coloured scottie dog all over it that I thought it would look good on display! Isn’t it cute!

Our spare room has gone on quite a journey since we bought the house. It’s gone from an unsightly mess, to a dumping ground, to a home office and dumping ground rolled into one, to a room I finally enjoy spending time in. Since we’ve completed the spare room makeover, I’ve found I actually do spend time there, particularly as it’s now a useful place to do my make-up in the mornings. It feels great to have my beauty products stored in the dressing table and my own quiet space to finish getting ready in the mornings.

I absolutely adore that dressing table! If I had a spare room it would 100% be my 'get ready' room!

It looks great! And the storage works so well for that room! I had the same issue with my spare room and didn't know what to do. I had it as an actual guest room but it was just wasted. So after a while I changed it into a little study and love it! I use it all the time now rather than just walk on by ha. x

Thank you 🙂 Yes it is like the perfect storage solution! Same here – I use it everyday now whereas before it was just a dumping ground 🙂 x
