In my eyes, the single most important component of a luxe life is happiness. These days, I tend to find it easier to see the good in any situation and to see things in a much more positive light. Still, the truth remains that no matter how much of a happy, positive, joyful person you are, there’ll always be times when you feel a bit rubbish. Nobody can be happy 100% of the time every day of every week. That being said, there are plenty of things we can do when we’re not having the best of days.
Here are 6 instant mood boosters I use that never fail to lift my spirits when things just aren’t feeling too great.
1. Think of everything you’re grateful for
Gratitude is seriously underrated, in my opinion. It’s a tool I’ve been using on a frequent basis for quite some time now and it’s powerful stuff.
Comparison is undeniably the thief of joy and we all know that, but there are still times when it creeps into your mind and threatens to take over. It’s at times like this that gratitude is a massive mood booster.
If you begin to mentally list everything you have in your life to be grateful for, you can’t help but realise just how huge the list really is. It’s when we stop focusing on what we don’t have and instead reflect on what we do have that the magic happens. I’m not just talking about material things either. The list of all the possessions we have is incredible alone, but when you add everything else like the love you receive from family members, the support from friendships, the ability to breathe by yourself, walk by yourself and so on, you realise just how good things really are.
2. Get out into the fresh air
There’s something to be said for spending time outside, whether it’s going for a walk, a run, or spending time in the garden. If I’ve been cooped up inside for hours, I love to go for a walk outside, whether it’s walking around a lake or taking the dog to the park. There’s nothing quite like walking through nature, inhaling the air and listening to the birds tweeting and the trees rustling.
3. Find music that makes you feel good
Something that simply never fails to cheer me up if I’m having a bit of a rubbish day is popping on some feelgood music. My favourite thing to do is reach for my headphones, find some upbeat tunes I really enjoy, turn up the volume and have a good singalong. I often do this while I’m doing housework so I’m not only having fun dancing and singing along, but I also end up with a tidy, clean house too.
4. Have a pamper session
I personally find that when I feel that I look good, I feel good too. I’ve often been guilty of putting things like painting my nails and getting some ‘me time’ to the bottom of the list and making everything else a priority. Because of this, 1 of my resolutions last year was to relax and treat myself more.
Sometimes I find it really boosts my mood and my confidence to have a relaxing bath, slather on some fake tan and paint my nails. Plus it means I’m feeling good the next day too, so it’s a win-win.
5. Write a to do list and get things ticked off
When I feel like I haven’t achieved much or I feel a bit overwhelmed as to what to do, it really has an impact on my mood. A great way to combat this is to make a to do list and prioritise what jobs need doing. If I feel that completing certain jobs will make me feel better, I get to work on them straight away.
It’s a nice feeling to see everything that needs doing written down in an easy list. It makes things seem much more manageable. And of course it’s an even nicer feeling ticking it all off.
6. Read an inspiring book or watch an inspiring video
Inspirational books and videos are such good mood boosters whether you’re feeling a bit down, if things aren’t going to plan or you’re just plain fed up. There’s nothing quite so motivating as finding a book or video that completely inspires you and instantly lifts your mood. There are so many out there to choose from and of course Youtube has an enormous selection of inspiring videos that are completely free to watch.
In terms of books, I highly recommend The Secret. There are so many motivational authors and speakers mentioned in the book too whose books and videos you can easily find. One of my favourites speakers mentioned in the book is Esther/Abraham Hicks – search for Abraham Hicks on Youtube and you’ll find a huge array of fabulous videos to choose from.
When the lovely Jordan at Hello Miss Jordan mentioned on Twitter that she’s been really enjoying watching Jake Ducey’s videos, I nipped on over to take a look. I’d really recommend his videos too – they’re really inspiring and he posts a new one every day.
These are all ways that really work to transform my world when I’m feeling a bit rubbish. We’ve all been there and we all go through it. Remember that everything is temporary and this too shall pass. No matter how rubbish or worthless you’re feeling, no matter what situation you find yourself in, it will pass and good times are on their way. Promise.
